Dirty washing should be laundered at home.. is what we were told growing up. Never show things people might use against you later on.
I can hardly imagine any one who doesn’t have something they’d rather not tell up front, because what might people think.. Being transparent is not a safe way of life..
I once had a job interview and as usual the question about naming five negative aspects about me came along. I’ve always disliked that way of interviewing people and I believe it’s not a good way of getting to know someone. I thought.. well, I will answer the question! Hold on to your seats people. Well you know, I said, I’m lazy, selfish, vindictive, jealous and unreasonable. The faces at the other end of the table stared at me full of disbelieve. What was this woman saying?? Yes, I said, and so are all the people in this country! Everyone has a certain percentage of negative aspects and people who tell you otherwise… Well you might add the quality of being dishonest to the five you were looking for.
It all depends on what good qualities someone has to balance the lesser ones, but if you ask me about these, I honestly admit that I have them in some degree. The interviewers weren’t ready for my true colours, apparently. It will not come as a surprise to you that I didn’t get the job. Hahahaha.I guess my true colour had been noted as a negative quality.
Being vulnerable by being open about yourself is tough. It might work as a strength if you own your story. If you are proud of what you’ve been through and what you’ve learned, it will show. It may even become a success story. There a many people who give motivational speeches with a ‘look what I’ve been through’ parts and they stand in the spotlight with their power as the result of their struggles. That’s what inspires people. They will think ‘if she did it, I can do it!’
I think we have left the time of being ashamed about going in to therapy behind us. These days everybody is doing something to improve themselves. Self help books are hot and the ‘make me a better me-workshops’ are booming business. It seems to be time to do something about our self esteem.
Soft is the new hard. Vulnerability is now seen as normal. I love this movement in the world. So nice that we are allowed to become our true selves and doing your laundry outside of the house is becoming a way of life.
It would be nice if we were selected because of our true colours. Our climbing the mountain in life would be recognize as a accomplishment that has value and is no longer seen as a negative aspect. The acceptance that our vulnerability is what makes us strong!
