If you want to, you can celebrate something every day. I check the special day calender from time to time, to see if I’m not missing out on reasons to celebrate things. I found the International Day of the Left-handed People.  Alrighty! I’m in. I will support them for a day and be a wannabe leftie. I’m not promising great results, I’m still recovering from my project of not complaining for a day. I have a Betty to deal with..

The question that came to mind was… why would people need to have a special day for lefties and why on the 13th? The idea is that the whole world will be left-handed for a day. It’s a worldwide event to inform people about left-handedness.  We are supposed to experience the discomfort for a day.

Hmm, I didn’t know there was silent suffering about this subject. The choice for the 13th is based on the percentage of people who are left-handed. My curiosity was getting out of hand and I explored the internet and an entire new world unfolded before my eyes. Left-handed people… Unite! I read out loud.

The information kept flowing through me. Leftie facts. There are twice as many men left-handed as to left-handed women. Lefties have a bigger ‘risk’ of being a genius. They can endure higher levels of stimuli and are better gamers because of that. Out of the last five presidents of the US, three were lefties (Bush sr, Clinton en Obama).  Science has proven that lefties live nine years less then right-handed people. The ultimate leftie fact is this one: Mothers who have babies at an older age,  ‘risk’ giving birth to lefties. Ladies, it’s so you know what you’re getting into..

There is a serious side to this subject. I never realized that there are dangerous situations for lefties. The organization wants to highlight this on this special day. In the past years they made sure that power tools were adjusted by the one manufacturer so they could be used safely by lefties. The large banks in the UK have developed special cheque books for lefties and the organization provides special eduction programmes for parents and schools.

In the miraculous world of the lefties I came across a little test. Click on the hands to find out if you are a leftie. Button test I was surprised to be 11% left-handed..

Well I’m being supportive today and I’m going to try to do as much as I can with my left hand. Who’s in with me?
